thing but a casual acquaintance. Mr. HUGHES went on to say
that he has been in the club business for several years and has
automatically come into contact with several other club owners,
one of which was JACK RUBY. He stated that he has never had
any3engthy conversations with RUBY, and that to the best of
his knowledge, they never discussed politics. The conversations
always seemed to center around the entertainment field or in
the operation of the various night clubs in and around Dallas.
He could recall the last time he saw JACK RUBY was sometime in
1960, at a meeting of the various club owners in the Dallas
area. He could not recall all the individuals present atlas
meeting, but was under the impression that the meeting was
called to organize some type of club to analyze the Liquor Board
Control standard regulations inasmuch as most of the club
owners were not fully aware of just exactly what they consisted
of. This was the last time he had either talked with RUBY and
believed that it was the last time he even saw RUBY.
He could offer no information whatsoever concerning
RUBY's background, friends, and relatives, and stated that he
had never heard of the name LEE HARVEY OSWALD prior to
the
assassination. He knew of no connection between RUBY and
OSWALD; between RUBY and any member of the Dallas Police Depart-
ment; and no one who was a member of the Dallas Police Depart-
ment who worked
for RUBY at any tine.
